~ SOLVING REMOTE ACCESS PROBLEMS ~
If you are having trouble accessing Grolier's Encyclopedia Americana it may be because (1) your browser security settings are set
too high or (2) your antivirus protection is preventing your PC from passing the required referrer information to Grolier for authentication.

(1) BROWSER SECURITY SETTINGS (INTERNET EXPLORER): From your Internet toolbar go to TOOLS then click on INTERNET OPTIONS on the drop-down menu. Click on the SECURITY tab and check to make sure that your security level is set to MEDIUM or below. (2) VIRUS PROTECTION: Symantec (Norton Antivirus) products block referrer information from being sent from one web site to another. In order to open the authentication page for Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier requires a "referral" from the Windsor Locks Library's web site. In other words, you can only get into the encyclopedia by clicking on the link that we provide on our homepage. If you are running Norton Antivirus on your PC it could be interfering with passing the referrer information from our web site to Grolier's, so no authentication page will come up. You need to create a rule that allows Grolier's web site know that you are coming from the Windsor Locks Public Library's site. Every version of Norton Internet Security is slightly different. Instructions for creating the needed rule in different versions of Norton are listed below. Norton 2006: Open NORTON INTERNET SECURITY and click on PERSONAL FIREWALL under "Status Settings", then click on the CONFIGURE button. Go to the advanced tab and click on the GENERAL button on the "Advanced Firewall" page. This will bring you to the "General Rules" page where you will click ADD to create a new rule allowing information to be sent to Grolier so they can determine that you are entering their database from the Windsor Locks Public Library site. From this point, add your internet security rule as follows: ~ PERMIT a new connection. ~ Permit connections TO other computers. ~ Permit ONLY the sites listed below: Type in auth.grolier.com. ~ Leave the next 2 pages at default, then name your rule and click NEXT until you FINISH. ~ Your new rule should be displayed on the general rules page, where you should clik OK to finish, then OK again on the advance firewall page. Your final step is to open PRIVACY CONTROL, click on CONFIGURE, then on CUSTOM LEVEL. This will take you to a page called "Customize Privacy Settings". On this page unclick the button "Enable Browser Privacy", then click OK, then OK again on the PRIVACY CONTROL page. Now you should be able to access Grolier's Encyclopedia Americana from your home PC.
