Picture Book of the Week

Every week the children's librarian picks out a book she thinks is special.  This week's book is "Alfie," written and illustrated by Thyra Heder

Nia gets a pet turtle for her sixth birthday and names him Alfie.  She's very excited at first, but loses interest when he doesn't do much.  Then one day he disappears.  We switch to Alfie's perspective as he breaks out of his cage and searches for the perfect present for Nia's seventh birthday.  But will he make it on time?

The two different perspectives in this book are what make it so special.  When we see it from Nia's perspective, we see a pet that isn't very interesting.  But when we see it from Alfie's perspective, the readers sees how much he loves Nia and how important her attention is to him.  There is also a surprise ending that you'll only notice if you look at the pictures closely.

Best for ages 5-7.
